2024 December Masters Camp
By Roddy Ward
What an incredible group of people we had at our camp this past weekend! We had the best group vibe! 18 great people, 4 great coaches, a strength coach, a nutritionist, and a guest speaker. It was a really fun weekend.
Here is what we accomplished over the camp.
5 skiing sessions - we covered double pole, one skate, diagonal stride, offset, and cornering
Lunchtime ski technique, presentations, and social time
Lots of individualized video analysis sessions each day
Strength training for cross country skiing, delivered by Chelsea Mackenzie and Roddy Ward
Sport dietician, Kelly Drager (Calgary Sport Institute) delivered an incredibly informative nutrition talk about fueling for long distance racing, loppets and training. We also tested sporrt and recovery drinks! Turns out these new vegan recovery drinks are pretty tasty!
Team dinner & social at the Iron Goat restaurant. Norbert Meier was our guest speaker. Norbert is a long time masters racer having raced many world loppets and masters world championships since the 1990’s. Norbert also runs the Alberta World Cup Society. Norbert brought world cup racing back to Canmore 20 years ago and continues to secure and run these events. We are incredibly grateful to have Norbert in Canmore!
A great social environment to get to know, have discussions with, and learn from like minded folks
We owe a big thanks to the Canmore Nordic Centre. Despite limited natural snow we had a lot of skiing from frozen thunder storage snow and snow making. We had full stadiums for large group work and over 10km of ski trail. We had more than enough space to have a fantastic and productive camp! It’s amazing what the Canmore Nordic Centre can produce! (however, we are now hoping for some natural snow :)
Two more camps still this season. Check here for more details.
Quick break during one of our ski sessions. A rare moody sky Canmore day.
Nutrition session about long distance racing, loppets, and long distance training
A nice little stretching session after our ski specific strength session
Late afternoon skate ski during the camp. Learning to use our legs properly and applying our double pole cues to one skate.
Beautiful Canmore Nordic Centre morning!
A typical sunny December Canmore morning!
